SAN DIEGO -- The first day of the Wintertime Meetings was, as Padres common manger A.J. Preller termed that, 'busy and hectic.'

Yet, Monday came and went without a deal of any kind for the Padres, who have recognized they have significant offensive upgrades to acquire between now and also Opening Day.

But when all those upgrades will arrive is actually anyone's guess.

'The offseason is a prolonged offseason, and it doesn't end while using Winter Meetings,' Preller informed. 'In an ideal world, we get anything done this week that improves the team. But, ultimately, it may not be this week or this thirty day period.'

The Padres, who had the worst offense in all of baseball in 2014, are seeking multiple upgrades with many spots and have been recently linked to a handful of players -- via free agency and through deals. Preller, on the job since August, provides cast a wide net when it comes to contacting agents and common managers about potential suits.Football Team Store

He spent most of Monday concealed inside a two-room suite at the Winter weather Meetings' hotel, talking trades in addition to giving serious consideration to likely deals.

The team has been linked to Dodgers' outfielder Matt Kemp, and rumors persist the team will move catcher Yasmani Grandal among others to land Kemp -- who has several years and $107 million remaining with his contract.

The Reds' Jay Bruce and also Yoenis Cespedes of the Red Sox are two participants the Padres have also expressed desire for. They have also been linked to Braves' outfielder Justin Upton.

If the Padres were to land any sexual four players, they would quickly become the best hitter from the lineup.

The Kemp rumors have endured for weeks, although some think the Dodgers aren't entirely seriously interested in moving him -- with or without income relief to the team he or she heads to.

The Padres appear set to relocate Grandal in a deal, and ready to currently have Rene Rivera set to handle the staff in 2015, with Austin Hedges, the top defensive catcher in the Slight Leagues, not far off.

It was described Monday that the Rangers -- Preller's ex- team -- might have interest in drink pitcher Andrew Cashner. But the Padres want to maintain Cashner and Tyson Ross together at the top of his or her rotation and feel they will make a run in the Nationwide League West by building all around those two -- not breaking these people apart.

'It's the time of year for many speculation,' said Preller, who has a policy of not commenting on specific players as well as rumors.

At this point, Preller said, teams know what the Padres have to offer in the deal: Grandal, starting pitcher Ian Kennedy, several relievers and any number of Slight League players, though the workforce doesn't have many Major League-ready Modest League prospects.

The Padres, consequently, have a good idea of what might be there when needed in a deal.

Does that mean a trade or trades may very well be imminent and that the Padres can make their splash right with the Winter Meetings in their own yard?

'Where we're at right now … the crucial element is we've done our own homework and know exactly where teams are at right now. I believe they know where we stay. Now we have to see if we have a go with,' Preller said.

Preller said that the team is looking at players who is able to help the team in the short term and lasting, though he came back to help later say that, ideally, he'd like 'guys in a perfect globe would be a fit for us in a long-term-type setting.'

Could that mean taking on binding agreement or, many more accurately, a farmer under team control?

Preller indicated that he wouldn't have a problem investing within the division, even if that will meant dealing with a NL West group the Padres would face 17 times a season.

'We're very open to deals that get all of us better,' Preller said.

If this Padres do anything at these Gatherings -- or later -- it will very likely involve the trade current market more so than free organization, as the team missed in free-agent third baseman Pablo Sandoval and were only set to go to a certain level on Cuban slugger Yasmany Tomas, who agreed to some sort of six-year, $68.5 million deal with this D-backs on Monday.

'Today was a blend of talking to agents and speaking with clubs,' said Preller, that had meetings scheduled delayed Monday. 'With some of the big bats off the market, we'll likely to end up a little more active on the trade front.'

Elsewhere, the Padres have right up until Thursday to complete a contract with Korean left-handed pitcher Kwang-Hyun Kim. Preller said the team is doing its 'due diligence' and going over the medicals but that Ellie had a good meeting throughout San Diego. Preller is set to talk to Kim's adviser, Melvin Roman, this week.
